Remembering SFU student organizing & learning from labour

Marcy Cohen witnessed student organizing at SFU first hand during the late sixties and early seventies. She also reflects on organizing successes from her participation in the labour movement and the living wage campaign.

The following was part of the panel "Looking Back, Moving Forward: The History of Activism at SFU", recorded at SFU in early November.

It was originally produced for the show "SFU Ideas and Issues" on CJSF 90.1 FM, at www.cjsf.ca. The show airs weekly from noon to 1pm, PST. This was recorded and produced by Bea Bernhausen and Peter Driftmier.

What role do students and workers play in shaping University Life?

SFU maintains a reputation for having a socially conscious faculty and student body because of student and worker movements in the university since 1964. Past campus leaders will help highlight these efforts to improve university life by sharing their experiences of university-based activism.

That last Intolerance of Intolernace comment

was from me. I will go toe to toe with any market rationalizer or appologist anytime, and hold them accountable for the demise fo the Planet at that. I will die before I'll let some McCarthyist BS dumb down basic observation of that which is responsible for the vast majority of sysematic suffering on this beautiful Earth.

GET OFF THE FUCKING intellectual FENCE or risk being the last generations living on this planet in any kind of reasonable existence.

(I just wasn't signed in when I posted that last one as anonymous and was concerned I'd loose what I'd written if I went through log in).

And if you want an alternative, parecon by Chomsky' protege is the best there's ever been. READ UP, or suffer under catalysmic, defacto capitalism. When shit hits the fan, if we don't have an alternative vision, things won't get better, they'll get worse. Ppl don't get more intellectually resourceful in crises they get desperate and overly pragmatic, as it gets day-to-day, hour-to-hour in real crisis.
