Vale Inco, a nickel and oar mine located in Sudbury, ON, will be hiring outside, non-unionised staff as a direct response to a workers' strike. This is the first time that Vale Inco (formerly Inco) has definitively moved to outsource labour during a strike.
This is maybe a bad sign for labour unions in Sudbury, who have fought and won some notable battles in canada's labour arena.
This is also a sad sign for environmentalists who might have been hoping for a longer shut-down from the mine.
The union is hoping that general citizens start to speak out, and are doing it using nationalistic rhetoric (wanting people to stand up against a foreign company acquiring Sudbury resources), which i think leaves much to be desired.
But what the reaction will be to this outsourcing of labour will be, time can only tell.
