“Neoliberal Trojan Horse: Philanthropy, Governance and the Role of Universities in the Affluent Age of Austerity”

Paul Hamel is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto. His research lab studies basic molecular-genetic pathways that govern morphogenesis of the mammary gland during puberty and embryogenesis. He is the Director of the Health Studies Program at University College, an undergraduate program that studies the social, economic and political aspects of health in Canada and globally. He also teaches in the area of Global Health & Human Rights. Recently, with his collaborator, Professor Emeritus John Valleau, they have considered the nature of “the university” and the distorting effects of philanthropy on the university as well as the changing nature of university governance.
