Javier graduated from the Havana's “Instituto Superior de Relaciones
Internacionales” (ISRI) in 1992. Since 1992, Javier has been posted in several
diplomatic missions around the world including Turkey, Zimbabwe and Kenya,
during this time he has also worked for Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

September 12, 2013 marked 15 years since the original imprisonment of the Cuban
5 anti-terrorist Heroes. A lot has changed since then. The international
campaign demanding their freedom has grown substantially. One of the Cuban 5,
René González, has also returned to Cuba permanently. All in all, the Cuban 5
have become the most well-known political prisoners in the world. Proof of this
was recently demonstrated again through the successful, “Yellow Ribbons for the
Cuban 5” campaign initiated by René upon his return to Cuba.  Yellow
ribbons covered all of Cuba, and then spread across every continent in the
world in an increasingly diverse, coordinated and ongoing effort to raise
awareness about this critical human rights case. For the first time in 15
years, the majority of major international press agencies were forced to cover
the case at the same time.

The stakes continue to be high. Four innocent men remain in jail 15 years after
their original imprisonment, while the U.S.-backed terrorists they exposed
walk free in Miami. Gerardo Hernández continues to face a double life
sentence, plus 15 years, and would die in prison if the U.S. government has its
way. The campaign to “Free All the Cuban 5 Now!” is at a crucial stage, and the
clock of injustice continues to tick.

freedom of the Cuban 5, and the prospects and challenges for the future.

El
12 de septiembre de 2013 se cumplieron 15 años del encarcelamiento original de
los Cinco Héroes Antiterroristas Cubanos. Mucho ha cambiado desde entonces. La
campaña internacional exigiendo su libertad ha crecido de manera sustancial.
Uno de los Cinco, René González, ha regresado a Cuba de manera permanente. En
general, los Cinco se han convertido en los prisioneros políticos  más
conocidos del mundo. La prueba de esto se pudo evidenciar nuevamente a través
de la exitosa campaña “Cintas Amarillas por los Cinco” iniciada por René luego
de su regreso a Cuba. Las cintas amarillas inundaron a Cuba, y se esparcieron
por cada continente del mundo en un esfuerzo continuo, coordinado, y
crecientemente diverso para despertar la conciencia de la gente acerca de este
caso crítico sobre los derechos humanos. Por primera vez en 15 años, la mayoría
de las grandes agencias de prensa internacional se vieron obligadas a cubrir
este caso a la misma vez.

Sigue habiendo mucho en juego. Cuatro hombres inocentes permanecen en prisión
15 años después de su encarcelamiento inicial, mientras que los terroristas
apoyados por Estados Unidos —denunciados por los Cinco— andan libres por las
calles de Miami. Gerardo Hernçandez continúa enfrentando una doble cadena
perpetua más 15 años, y moriría en prisión si dependiera del gobierno de
