Speaker Bios
Khaled Barakat is a Palestinian activist, journalist and writer based in Vancouver. His writing on current events and Palestinian issues are widely published in Arabic media.
Kerry Coast is a journalist, dramatist and activist from unceded indigenous territories on the North West Pacific Coast, now called British Columbia, Canada. Coast is just returning from New York where she served for the third time as representative for International Human Rights Association of American Minorities at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and from Geneva at the Human Rights Council's 6th Session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Her recently published book, The Colonial Present: The rule of ignorance and the role of law in British Columbia, is about the ongoing process of colonization, criminalization and forced assimilation of Indigenous peoples in BC.
Charlotte Kates is an organizer with the Boycott Israeli Apartheid Campaign (BIAC) and SAMIDOUN Political Prisoners Network. She has practiced as a lawyer in the United States and is a member of the National Lawyers Guild International Committee.
Pragash Pio is on the executive committee of BASICS Community News Service and a community organizers with Radio BASICS, the May 1st Movement (M1M) and the International League of Peoples Struggles in Toronto.
Jeff Shantz is a Professor in the criminology department at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, a member of the Critical Criminology Working Group and editor of the journal, Radical Criminology.
