Join SFPIRG and Fat Panic! Vancouver for a day of fat politics and body positivity! Body size and weight are big topics these days – not to mention big business.
In this full-day workshop we will use facilitated discussion, writing exercises and just a little bit of (optional) theatre to explore what fatness has come to mean in our society, and how fat oppression, in conjunction with many other patterns of injustice, works to shape our day to day lives, including our relationships with other people and our own bodies. We will consider some of the abundant myths about fat health and take a tour through some of the research relating to fatness and mortality/longevity, all while turning a critical eye on the role that healthism plays in shaping these discussions.
Fat oppression targets those of us who are considered ‘too fat.’ But every one of us, no matter what our body size, is impacted by this form of injustice, and each of us can play a role in tearing it down. Let’s work together to create a world in which no one is taught to hate their own or anyone else’s body. Facilitated by Kalamity Hildebrandt & Michelle Korak.
