Occupied Coast Salish Territory (Vancouver)

Squatting: From Exarcheia to Vancouver (Workshop & Info Night)

6:00pm
- 8:00pm
Sunday March 29 2015

Venue: 38 Blood Alley
Address: 38 Blood Alley Square, Vancouver, British Columbia V6B 0C4
Cost: free/by donation
Accessibility: The venue is situated on the south side of Blood Alley Square. There are several cobblestones, but there is ramp access and it’s an open space once inside. There are fewer cobblestones to navigate coming from Abbott as opposed to Carrall. The washroom is not fully WC accessible, the doorway is about 27 inches wide.

Join us for an info night on squatting, examining case studies from ancient times to modern occupations in Greece, Canada, and elsewhere, as well as a workshop on different strategies used to occupy and retain space.

A squat refers any abandoned or unused building or piece of land that is occupied by one who does not own, rent, or have "lawful" permission to use it. They can be established for a variety of reasons: as a means of protest, to create social centers, to preserve land or monuments, or simply because of the need for housing.

Although today most states consider squatting to be illegal, humans have been doing it for thousands of years. According to Colin Ward, "Squatting is the oldest mode of tenure in the world, and we are all descended from squatters. We are all the ultimate recipients of stolen land, for to regard our planet as a commodity offends every conceivable principle of natural rights."
