WOMEN & THE CUBAN REVOLUTION
A Revolution Within the Revolution

Film, Live Music & Poetry
>> An evening featuring political and cultural presentations from women around the world!

SATURDAY March 7
6pm
Vancouver Public Library ~ Peter Kay Room
350 West Georgia Street
Downtown Vancouver, Canada

The Cuban revolution of 1959 opened a new era for Cuban women, which
Fidel Castro in 1966 stated “has meant a double liberation” for women,
“who were discriminated against not only as workers but also as
women.” Under the Cuban revolution women have advanced the struggle
for women's rights, starting immediately after the triumph of the
revolution. Women in Cuba are guaranteed equal pay, universal
childcare, and it is enshrined into law with Cuba's Family Code Bill
that participation in household work should be equal. The results
today are that Cuban women make up 43% of Parliament, and 60% of
professional and technical workers. Cuban women have also achieved the
impressive rank of third highest in the world for the percentage of
women in government.

The “Revolution within the Revolution” is what Fidel called the fight
for women's rights in Cuba, and it is a revolution which is thriving
and moving forward even today, for Cuban women and the world-wide
struggle of for women's rights!
