The hidden 4th pillar of the Olympic Games: Privatized Profits and Socialized Debt
Prof. Chris Shaw
Prof. Chris Shaw

Prof. Chris Shaw, Department of Ophthalmology at the University of British Columbia is the author
of  "Five Ring Circus: Myths and Realities of the Olympic Games" and is a long time critic of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Beside the official pillars of the olympic movement: Sports, culture and environmental conservation, Prof. Shaw presents a hidden 4th. that the officials don't want to talk about: Privatized Profit and Socialized Debt.

He analyses doping, bribery and corruption around olympic politics in an easy to follow hour long talk. Listen to how the Nigarian Banking Scam was made more efficient to affect whole regions and learn about the realities of economic impacts. Will the Olympics significantly increase attention to already one of the biggest ski resorts in North America? Does it make sense to spend billions for games in an economic crisis? Is it about sports at all? Chris answered those and other questions and how Gordon Campell and Jack Poole got their Convention Centre after all.

Prof. Shaw spoke October 5th, 2009 at Green College, on the UBC campus, as 3rd part of the Olympics Critic Speakers Series.
