52nd Anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day

In 1949, the army of the People's Republic of China invaded Tibet and began a cruel and oppressive occupation that continues to this day. On March 10, 1959 the Tibetan people rose up against their oppressors, but the revolt was brutally put down. Thousands of Tibetans were killed and thousands more, including the Dalai Lama, fled into exile in India. This day is known as the Tibetan National Uprising Day and its anniversary is commemorated each year in cities around the world.

On March 10, 2011, a group of Tibetans and their supporters staged a rally and candlelight vigil outside the Chinese Consulate in Vancouver, on Granville street.
