Spartacus Books July Newsletter

Blog posts are the work of individual contributors, reflecting their thoughts, opinions and research.

The summer is sliding by, and maybe a summer reading list has grown in your pocket.
Where better to fulfill those intellectual summer desires than within the doors of Spartacus Books?
Whether you're curious about the physiology of anarchist thought so you can deconstruct the post hockey game riots. or you want to read about labour history so you can show solidarity with the post office workers, then do we have the book for you!

And what blocks a foot full of sand better then a book?

Spartacus also has an exciting project underway.  If you have noticed while wandering the streets of vancouver, there is not a phone booth to be found.  Prominently featured outside our doors is an answer to that problem, the peoples phone! a group of spartans has bound together to solve the problem of poor communication.  So come down and make some free phone calls, with the whir of traffic returning to the background of your phone calls.

And, as a celebration of genocide and colonization also approaches so does a day of cheap books! Spartacus Books is having a sale.  July 1-3 all our books will be on sale. 25-35% off on new and used books.  We need room on our selves to order more, so come on down and help us clean them up. We are too lazy to do it ourselves.

Here are some of our new titles to massage your brain waves and tickle your feet into coming down and hanging out:

Reclaiming the F word: the new feminist movement by Catherine Redfern and Kristin Aune

"In today's 'post-feminist' society, women and men are considered equal. For younger women and men, feminism is often portrayed as unfashionable and irrelevant. But since the beginning of the new millennium a revitalized feminist movement has emerged to challenge these assumptions and assert a vibrant new agenda. This groundbreaking book reveals the what, why and how of the new feminist movement and what it has to say about women's lives in today's society. From cosmetic surgery to celebrity culture and girl power to globalization, from rape to religion and sex to singleness, this book reveals the seven vital issues at stake for today's feminists, unveils the beginnings of a fresh and diverse wave of feminism, and calls a new generation back to action
Broke but unbroken: grassroots social movements and their radical solutions to poverty."

The revolution starts at home: confronting intimate violence within activist Communities
The extent of the violence affecting our communities is staggering. Nearly one in three women in the United States will experience intimate violence in her lifetime. And while intimate violence affects relationships across the sexuality and gender spectrums, the likelihood of isolation and irreparable harm, including death, is even greater within LGBTQI communities. To effectively resist violence out there—in the prison system, on militarized borders, or other clear encounters with "the system"—we must challenge how it is reproduced right where we live. It's one thing when the perpetrator is the police, the state, or someone we don't know. It's quite another when that person is someone we call a friend, lover, and trusted ally.

We called each other comrade: Charles H. Kerr & company, radical publishers
"This is the history of the most significant translator, publisher, and distributor of left-wing literature in the United States. Based in Chicago and still publishing, Charles H. Kerr & Company began in 1886 as a publisher of Unitarian tracts. The company's focus changed after its founder, the son of abolitionist activists, became a socialist at the turn of the century. "

Gay genius
"Gay Genius is a comics anthology illuminating the past, present and future of queer history makers. It is a labor of love, a celebration of possibility, an offering to the ancestors. Conceived and edited by Annie Murphy, Gay Genius is a showcase of contemporary radical queer visionaries-to-watch-out-for."
