very quick entry:
It takes a small local newspaper like the “Orangeville Citizen” located eponymously in Ontario, to speak the truth and expose the elaborate farcical, charade we are witnessing which is making this country look like the laughing stock of the G-20. Our great ruler disposes of parliament, whenever it pleases him and so we live under the “illusion of democracy”. The newspaper’s columnist puts it all very eloquently in his piece (published 01, 21, 10).
“In Canada, democracy is based on the ultimate control of governance being invested in the House of Commons, not government and particularly not within the authority of the prime minister. It is time for our elected representatives to accept their responsibility for holding the government accountable and change the rules of parliament. This can be done by a simple resolution in the House requiring that no head of government be able to advise the governor general to prorogue or dissolve parliament. This should be the role of our elected representatives. "
Therefore, the M.P.s must be consulted before prorogation occurs, for such a "routine" measure to be adopted. If they are not then the government has no legitimacy, whatsoever in imposing prorogation on the House and shutting it down for purely expedient, self- interested, political reasons. For instance, in the U.K, the government was made more accountable by means of a proposal adopted in parliament. The columnist explains how this was done. He writes the following: “The British House of Commons accomplished this in 2007 through a government proposal. A similar resolution in the Canadian House would place the prime minister in contempt of parliament should he/she advise the Queen’s representative to take such action [prorogation] without the approval of parliament.”
Why is our non –existent opposition (Jack how was the snorkelling in Belize? By the way, I bet their parliament isn’t shut down like ours is right now...) not pushing for such a resolution right now? Yes, the NDP’s call for a cap or limit on prorogation is a good thing but not enough. This government (or band of brigands who cravenly and deceptively, stole our parliamentary democracy) must be censured, punished, reprimanded at the polls for turning this country into a ‘colonial outpost”. And for leaving the citizenry without a working and functional legislature that's responsible and answerable to the electorate. If our great ruler continues to run the country as if it was his “personal fiefdom”, then our democracy is doomed and the rise of neo-fascism here is assured...
