MARCH TO DEFEND PUBLIC EDUCATION

BEGINNING AT THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY AND MARCHING THROUGH DOWNTOWN VANCOUVER *FOLLOWED BY RALLY AT THE VANCOUVER ART GALLERY*

SUNDAY APRIL 1ST AT 12:00 NOON

In light of education funding cuts and tuition hikes here and across Canada, and in solidarity with the protesting students of Quebec (http://tuitiontruth.ca/), students, staff, and those affected are mobilizing in defense of public education ON ALL LEVELS.

The attacks we are experiencing against public education affect EVERYONE: our post-secondary students, high school students, professors, teachers, teacher's assistants and most importantly, our families and our communities.

RIGHT NOW, people across the country are awakening to the realization that our education system is failing EVERYONE:

*In Quebec, post-secondary students in the hundreds of thousands continue to protest a crippling 75% proposed raise in tuition.

*Teachers in British Columbia are struggling to defend the quality of K-12 education against growing class sizes, lessening support for special needs students, and a lack of accountability by school boards.

*Post-Secondary students and faculty here in B.C. are opening their eyes to the devastating effects of the B.C. Liberal's $70 Million cut to post-secondary institutions under 'Budget 2012'. This means bigger classes, dwindling student support, HIGHER TUITION, cuts to the Arts & Social Sciences, and overworked instructors.

*Graduated students are finding themselves drowning in ever-increasing debt --punishment for seeking higher education – and are becoming less and less likely to find stable work with a livable wage.

We DO NOT have to accept the state of education as it stands in our province and in our country. Public education on all levels --including post-secondary -- is *FREE* and of *HIGH QUALITY* in Sweden, Ireland, Norway, Argentina, Finland, Iceland, and (truly) affordable in many other countries across the world. There is NO REASON why Canada cannot be on this list.

We CAN and MUST take a stand. We, the people, consider the attacks on public education an EMERGENCY. We demand an end to the privatization of all education in B.C. and call for IMMEDIATE ACTION.

COME MARCH TO DEFEND PUBLIC EDUCATION! Bring your reasons, bring your signs, and bring your red to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Quebec!

*wear your hoodie to support the Million Hoodies March starting at 2 pm!
