Incinerators burning garbage in India. Hundreds of hydroelectric dams in Panama. Eucalyptus forests harvested for charcoal in Brazil. What do these projects have in common? They are all receiving carbon credits for offsetting pollution created somewhere else. Carbon credits are traded like stocks and bonds. Credits are given which are then used to bankroll huge industrial operations, many of which are ravaging both the world’s poor and their environments. Narrated by Darryl Hannah, the film takes audiences on a fascinating journey to four continents to meet indigenous rainforest dwellers, recyclers, independent farmers and other subsistence livers.

Director Amy Miller examines this carbon formula to see what’s really happening behind the scenes, where traders are making a fortune. And you will be shocked to see what’s happening in countries like India, Brazil, Scotland, Panama, Honduras, and others, where projects funded by carbon-offset credits are in fact impoverishing and killing the world’s most vulnerable people and our most fragile environments. The effect: well meaning Americans and Canadians who support green endeavours and carbon offsetting have not only been duped, but are in fact helping big-business polluters get dirtier and bigger and richer. Miller investigates threatened ways of life, painting a picture of projects that claim to be sustainable and purport to offer innovative solutions to climate change, but seem to create more problems than they solve.
