On May 22nd, hereditary chief WEC'KINEM (Eric Pelkey), with support from Songhees and the WSÁNEĆ nations, will lead an action to reclaim the traditional name of PKOLS (formerly known as Mt. Douglas).

Please support this action, and join us on May 22nd.

Stories of PKOLS go back to nearly the beginning of time for WSÁNEĆ (Saanich) people, and throughout history it has been an important meeting place. PKOLS can be translated as “White Head”, which reflects the Indigenous oral history and geological findings that this was the last place glaciers receded from southern Vancouver Island.

PKOLS is also the place where James Douglas and his men met with WSÁNEĆ chiefs to discuss a peace treaty between indigenous people and the invaders. Outnumbered by WSÁNEĆ warriors, James Douglas offered blankets and money and what was considered to be a peace treaty. It was understood that the Douglas Treaty was a declaration of peace and a promise that the Saanich People would not be interfered with. This promise has since been broken.

On May 22nd, hereditary chief WEC'KINEM (Eric Pelkey), with support from Songhees and the WSÁNEĆ nations, will lead an action to reclaim the traditional name of PKOLS (formerly known as Mt. Doug). This action will include a march up PKOLS from the base; a re-enactment of the signing of the Douglas Treaty; the telling of oral histories and traditional significance of the mountain; and the installation of a sign declaring this name reclamation.

This action is also in support of the Indigenous Nationhood Movement, which aims to begin the process of decolonization through reoccupying, renaming and reclaiming traditional indigenous territories. This action is aligned with an international call for all peoples to have access to a sustainable environment in which Indigenous peoples have complete freedom to practice their traditional ways of life; and to establish sovereignty and restoration of traditional lands, culture and knowledge.

Please support this action, and join us on May 22nd. Meet at 5pm in the lower parking lot of PKOLS, where we will begin our march. All nations and people welcome!
