Solidarity Against Patriarchy (SAP) invites you to read with us! We are forming a reading group around two texts, Silvia Federici’s Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation (Autonomedia 2004) and Andrea Smith’s Conquest: Sexual Violence and American Indian Genocide (South End Press 2005).

We will start with Conquest. Books are available at Spartacus Books. Copies will be available for low-income participants. Please RSVP if you require a book so we know how many copies to have on hand.

In the meantime, a pdf copy of the foreword, introduction, and first chapter will be sent to everyone who RSVPs through the FB page.

Snacks and refreshments!

We are interested in these texts because they discuss two foundational moments in the establishment of patriarchy, one marking the beginning of capitalism in Europe, and one marking the beginning of capitalism on Turtle Island. Reading them together can give us a deep intersectional perspective on the relationships between patriarchy, capitalism, and colonialism.

Meeting dates:

Sept. 17: introductions: to each other, to Solidarity Against Patriarchy, to Conquest. At this meeting we will collectively decide how to run the group, ie pace, topics etc.

Tentative schedule:

Oct. 1: Conquest

Oct. 15: Conquest

Oct. 29: Conquest

Nov. 12: Caliban

Nov. 26: Caliban

Dec.10: Caliban

Solidarity Against Patriarchy (SAP) is a group of (mostly) male-identified people Vancouver, unceded Coast Salish Territories, working against internalized and external systems of patriarchy. The work that the group engages in can be divided into two categories: internal and external. Internally, SAP is both a dialogic and experientially focused discussion group targeted towards men but open to all genders for the purpose of exposing and challenging internalized forms of sexism and its associated intersectional oppressions, such as racism, homophobia, trans-misogyny, classism, ableism, etc. Externally, the group works to support the voices of women speaking out against sexism by creating film nights and establishing open discussions where women can publicly speak about and critique patriarchy. In addition, SAP seeks to educate men about how their behaviours uphold rape-culture by spreading anti-sexist propaganda across Vancouver (for instance, seehttp://www.wavaw.ca/solidarity-against-patriarchy/)

Spartacus Books is on the ground/street level. Both the outer door and the bathroom door are 800mm (31.49 inches) in width. In the gender neutral bathroom, there is one bar directly to the left of the toilet and one bar directly behind it. The inside of Spartacus is all one level except for a slight bump (about 1mm in height) close to the back.
