Socially conscious youth-directed production staged at democratic school

A provocative musical and comedic re-telling of Frankenstein about a naïve young couple stranded at the creepy castle of a cross-dressing mad scientist, Rocky Horror was chosen by students at Windsor House School, Vancouver's long-standing democratic school, to encourage youth to explore diverse notions of gender and sexuality.
“Windsor House creates a safe space for us to learn about the world and ourselves,” said Tyson, who plays Rocky and is also co-directing. “Putting on Rocky Horror lets us explore and communicate about our sexuality and become more comfortable with ourselves.”
The drama students also hope that Rocky Horror’s mature sexual content will spark conversations within families about age, sex, gender and sexuality.
“If we want to live in a society that accepts all kinds of different expressions of gender and sexuality, then we need to talk and think about these issues way more,” urged Maizy. “Hopefully this play gives kids and families a chance to do just that.”
The Rocky Horror Show plays nightly from October 28-30 at Windsor House School (2132 Hamilton Avenue, North Vancouver) at 8:00 pm, with doors at 7:30. A special Halloween matinee will be held at 1:00 pm on October 31. Tickets will be on sale at the door on a sliding scale of $10-20; proceeds will contribute to funding school activities.
