LNG and Fracking: Risky business for the economy and environment

The BC Government is touting a huge expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) extracted by fracking as so profitable it could eliminate the provincial debt. But fracking to export LNG has questionable economics, and potentially devastating effects including water pollution and GHG emissions about as bad for climatic stability as coal.
Presenters:
Damien Gillis, a Vancouver-based documentary filmmaker with a focus on environmental and social justice issues will show excerpts from his film Fractured Land, currently in production, which will premiere on CBC's Documentary Channel next year. British Columbians have heard little of the massive increase in fracking required to power the proposed LNG industry. Damien Gillis takes us to the exquisite wilderness of northeast BC to witness the impacts of shale gas on air, water, human and animal health - all through the eyes of Caleb Behn, a young Echo Dene and Dunne Za/Cree man from the territories at the heart of this development.
Ben Parfitt, an author and resource policy analyst with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives will expose the economic realities of BC’s energy development plans. He has written extensively about fracking, BC Hydro and the economics of oil and gas development. He will address recent developments in oil and gas production around the world and the fundamental economic flaws in the Government’s plans. There are alternatives to the disastrous path we are on, but we must act soon.
This meeting is organized by the Vancouver/Burnaby Chapter of the Council of Canadians. Donations will be collected for the production of Fractured Land and to support the Unist’ot’en Camp on the route of Chevron’s proposed Pacific Trail fracking gas pipeline and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway tar sands pipeline. The Unist’ot’en Camp is a resistance community on unceded Wet’suwet’en Territory near Houston BC.
