Finkelstein to tour Canada Oct. 26-30
Montreal, October 6, 2010 – Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is delighted to announce it is hosting a five-city speaking tour by American scholar Norman Finkelstein on Oct. 26-30. Finkelstein was awarded his doctorate by Princeton University in 1988, and has subsequently taught at Rutgers, New York University, Brooklyn College, Hunter College and DePaul University (Chicago). His academic research has concentrated on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its representation in political discourse. He has devoted much of his adult life to the achievement of a just peace between Israel and Palestine.
Dr. Finkelstein’s lecture tour—Israel and Palestine: Past, Present, Future—will focus on the situation in Gaza, the raid on the S.S. Mavi Marmara, the current stage of the peace process and the prospect of another regional war.
CJPME President Thomas Woodley says, “We hope that hearing Dr. Finkelstein will empower and galvanize Canadians to take action to promote a just resolution to this tragic conflict.” CJPME believes that, with the public debate on the Israel-Palestine negotiations process, it is a propitious moment for Finkelstein’s upcoming Canadian tour. Woodley adds, “The brutality of Israel’s assaults on Gaza and on the Mavi Marmara roused Canadians’ consciences, and Israel’s intransigence in the current round of negotiations lends added urgency to this tour.”
The son of two Holocaust survivors, Finkelstein grew up in New York City. He is the author of several books including ‘This Time We Went Too Far’ – Truth & Consequences of the Gaza Invasion; Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History; The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the Exploitation of Jewish Suffering; and Fall of Palestine: A Personal Account of the Intifada Years. His books have been translated into over 40 languages. As Raul Hilberg, author of The Destruction of the European Jews notes, “[Finkelstein’s] place in the whole history of writing history is assured.”
