(Don't miss Right to the City Day 1 on Friday evening http://vancouver.mediacoop.ca/events/4886)

Gentrification impacts communities the world over. In city after city, real estate and rising land values displace existing communities, only to be replaced by high-end condos, unaffordable stores, and poor-bashing organizations.

This conference will open a space for discussion of the role of police and courts in facilitating gentrification, analyze the relationship between art, philanthropy, and developers, and highlight Woodward’s and the Olympic Village as sites of struggle.

CONFERENCE SCHEDULE:

10:00am-11:30am
a. Policing & gentrification b. Art & gentrification

11:30am-1:00pm
a. Woodward’s: Then & Now b. Health and gentrification

1:00pm-1:30pm Lunch Break

1:30pm-3:00pm The Alternatives: Community Control

3:00pm-4:30pm Action Planning

The process of gentrification is not inevitable! Communities around the world have been organizing under the banner of “Right to the City” to resist displacement and to take community development into their own hands. East Vancouver is determined to remain an innovative leader in this global movement.
