Occupy Vancouver, Unceded Coast Salish Territory, February 21, 2012—
Occupy Vancouver to occupy Brookfield Asset Management over logging dispute.
What: A 24hour occupation of Brookfield offices in Vancouver.
When: From noon Saturday February 25 to noon Sunday February 26.
Where: Meeting at the Vancouver Art Gallery at noon then marching to 550 Burrard Street.
Why: Brookfield and its wholly owned subsidiary Island Timberlands are preparing to log old growth forest on Cortes Island BC, an area comprising much of the last remaining 1% of the original ancient Douglas Fir forest that once blanketed the coastal region.
“This is the same company that has achieved notoriety recently for evicting Occupy Wall Street from Liberty Square (Zuccotti Park), which the company owns,” said occupier Tosh Hyodo.
“We’re losing the last of our ancient forests—in the name of Wall Street profits—old growth forest sacrificed for the out of control growth of the speculative economy,” said Stephen Collis of Occupy Vancouver’s Environmental Justice Working Group. “We don’t think the last 1% of old growth Douglas firs should be used to help line the pockets of the world’s elite 1%.”
Actions have already taken place or are planned on Cortes Island, Powell River, London England and New York City.
