HandyDART Riders to hold forum on transit referendum in Surrey
For immediate release – Thursday October 23, 2014
What: Transit Referendum and HandyDART Public Forum. HandyDART riders and politicians available for interviews.
When: Saturday October 25, 2014 – 11am to 1pm
Where: Cloverdale Library 5642 176A Street Surrey BC.
Who: HandyDART Riders, the GetOnBoard BC transit coalition, the Metro Vancouver Alliance, and municipal and provincial politicians including TransLink Critic George Heyman and Surrey mayoral candidate Barinder Rasode. Organized by HandyDART Riders’ Alliance and Amalgamated Transit Union local 1724.
Why: HandyDART riders are mobilizing to win the March 2015 transit referendum, which includes a 30% increase in HandyDART service hours over 10 years. HandyDART service levels have been frozen for five years – and as a result people with disabilities and seniors were denied service over 42,000 times in 2013, an eight-fold increase in four years.
“We now have some great allies working to win the referendum for better transit and get more HandyDART vans on the road.” says HandyDART Riders’ Alliance spokesperson Beth McKellar. “If we don’t win, we will see cuts to HandyDART service and that would be unthinkable.”
Spokespeople and HandyDART riders will be available for interviews before and after the forum.
