DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE - More than 400 people marched from a City-backed condo site to City Hall this afternoon to press for an end to homelessness and for more affordable housing. The City-Wide Housing March was organized by the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users and  rights groups.

Much of the focus was on deplorable conditions in City-sanctioned SROs (Single Room Occupancy), including bedbugs, rats, unsanitary washrooms, cockroaches and  garbage. Marchers demanded an end to the war on the poor, especially in the Downtown Eastside.

Carnegie Community Action Project spokesperson Jean Swanson called for an end to the rapid gentrification  of the Downtown Eastside. She also called on the provincial and federal governments to pony up adequate social housing and increase welfare rates.

The marchers voiced support for the indigenous homeless Tent Village in Oppenheimer Park that has withstood several attempts by City Hall to shut it down. The camp is growing and has issued its own eviction order to the City to leave the unceded site.
