VANCOUVER - A protest was held outside the Mexican Consulate in downtown Vancouver this afternoon to demand the safe return of 43 missing rural student teachers.
The student teachers were rounded up by police during a demonstration for better access to education a week ago in Guerrero state. Three students were shot and killed by local police and paramilitaries and 50 wounded before the rest were abducted.
A mass grave has since been discovered in the area and is being examined to see if the tortured and burned remains are those of the missing students - all young men aged 19-22.
Protests have been held in cities and schools across Mexico demanding the safe return of the student teachers.
Today's rally in Vancouver was organized by Mexicans Living in Vancouver, the Trinational Coalition to protect Public Education, the BCTF and the IDEA Network.
