Damien Gillis recently spoke at TEDx Georgia Strait - part of TED Talks' local speaker series, TEDx. The event, held at UBC in February 2011, was themed "The New Energy." Damien's talk, "Beyond the Techno-fix", argued that our considerable energy challenges demand far more than just alternate energy solutions and increased efficiency. Referencing former CIBC World Markets Chief Economist Jeff Rubin and founder of the eco-footprint concept Dr. Bill Rees, Damien suggested that what's really required is an overall reduction in the amount of energy we use and abuse. Drawing on video he shot over the past several years around BC, Damien demonstrated the ecological trade-offs of one type of so-called "clean-tech" energy in BC - "run-of-river" private power - arguing that we should be putting conservation first.
