MEDIA ADVISORY: Chilliwack Constituents use Halloween to Call Attention to Harper Gov’t Terrifying Policies.

Monster Tar Sands Corporations, Ghosts of Environmental Laws, and Vampire Investors will gather at MP Mark Strahl’s office, putting him on watch for Harper’s Corporate Interest Agenda

by She La Emm

Chilliwack, BC, Unceded Sto:Lo Territories – Following a week of provincial demonstrations against all tar sands pipelines and tankers in BC, local Chilliwack residents will be gathering on Conservative MP Mark Strahl’s office on Halloween to question him about his party’s ‘terrifying’ actions that continue to support the interests of tar sands corporations while threatening  local environments and communities. Using the theme: ‘You think Halloween is Scary? Check out what the Harper Government is doing – It’s terrifying!’ the demonstration will call attention to the Harper Government’s relentless support for tar sands expansion, their recent use of Omnibus legislation to dismantle  environmental laws like the Fisheries Act and the Navigable Waters Act, and their ongoing support for Foreign Corporate Interests by signing agreements like the China-Canada Foreign Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (FIPPA) which gives Corporations the right to sue Canadian Governments if they impose regulations that undermine the ability to make a profit. For example if BC uses our provincial powers to block the Northern Gateway pipeline due to the risks to the local environment, economy and communities, Sinopec, a Chinese Corporation and partner with Enbridge on the project, could sue for compensation from the local tax base.

Mark Strahl was invited to attend the event and share a few words about this party’s policies, and his personal stance on the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline that runs through Chilliwack crossing over the local drinking water aquifer, behind Watson elementary school, and through numerous other high density residential and agricultural areas.  Mr. Strahl  has not yet responded to the invitation.

*The China-Canada FIPPA will come into effect on November 1st, unless there is a constitutional challenge made by the Premier, or another leader with the authority to do so.
