Build your J-skills with the VMC

Saturday, May 29, 3:30pm - 6pm: Co-op Radio programmer policy training. Next one is this Sat May 29th from 3:30-6:00pm at 360 Columbia Street (just north of Hastings). It's a good introduction to CRTC regulations and station guidelines, among other things. FYI training sessions at Coop cost $10 bucks, but the VMC can cover costs for folks that want to help us out with our slot on Co-op radio this summer (details below).

Wednesday, June 2, 6:30pm - 8pm: Intro to print journalism with Dawn Paley. From a punchy lead to a strong finish and everything in between: the basics of writing a readable, accessible news-style article. Dawn is a journalist and volunteer with the VMC. Held at 459 E Hastings (space is not wheelchair accessible). Please RSVP if you plan to join us for this workshop. vmc at mediacoop dot ca.

Thursday, June 3, 6:30pm - 8pm:
Final Cut Pro "how to" with Alejandro Zuluaga. Whether you've already made a short film or want to learn the basics, this workshop is aimed at folks who are sitting on raw video footage and need some editing tips. Please bring your raw footage and a laptop if you have one. Alejo is an activist, a youth worker and an emerging film maker with a degree in psychology and a diploma on documentary production. He has worked in multiple community television projects for Shaw's community broadcast space and has created various short documentaries in social justice issues. Held at 459 E Hastings (space is not wheelchair accessible). Please RSVP if you plan to join us for this workshop. vmc at mediacoop dot ca.

Wednesday June 9 5:30 - 9:30pm (FULL, but there is a waiting list): The Law Society of BC and the Jack Webster Foundation invite reporters, editors and producers to participate in their free annual Law and the Media Workshop on Wednesday at the Law Courts Inn restaurant, 206-800 Smithe St. in Vancouver (4th Floor of the court house). This year’s topics are publication bans, access to court documents and an update on Supreme Court of Canada decisions that could affect how journalists do their day-to-day jobs. SPACE IS LIMITED. Register by contacting Nora Newlands, Executive Director, Jack Webster Foundation at 604-261-6184 or info@jackwebster.com.

VMC Radio this summer

Just a reminder that VMC peeps have been invited to participate in the Sound Resistance/Pedal Revolutionary radio collective for the summer (starting June 11). There is room for you to try different things, it's not limited to talking into the mic (e.g. there's also operating the board, speaking on air, doing interviews, writing material for radio, prerecording/editing goodies for broadcast, etc).

The time slot is Friday mornings from 10:30am to noon, but there are other ways to contribute if that time doesn't work for you. You could research/write material, use the auxiliary studio to do prerecording/editing, etc.

So if you're interested in getting any programming experience this summer, you'll first need to come out to the Co-op Radio programmer policy training. Next one is this Sat May 29th from 3:30-6:00pm at 360 Columbia Street (just north of Hastings). It's a good introduction to CRTC regulations and station guidelines, among other things. FYI training sessions at Coop cost $10 bucks.

After that you will be able to take the hands-on control room training if you want to get some technical skills; there are some in June. We'll find opportunities for you to get on-air practice running the board for those who are interested.

Feel free to email pedalrevolutionary {AT} gmail {D0T} com if you have any questions!
