On June 5 2009 the Peruvian government ordered the National Police to stop a blockade in the city of Bagua in the Amazon province with violent force, leaving over 200 people dead - mainly Indigenous people protecting their land against logging, mining, oil and agroindustry. As a direct result of international protests, rallies, and outcry this week against the genocidal massacre of Indigenous peoples, on June 11 the Peruvian Congress issued a 90-day suspension of legislative decrees 1090 and 1064 in order
to restore dialogue.

Indigenous peoples are continuing to protest and calling for international solidarity to demand the complete revocation of all 10 federal decrees and unilaterally imposed free trade agreements that violate Indigenous peoples right to their lands, resources, and self-determination.

This is not just a “Peruvian” issue; this is a global issue; this is our
issue and protests have taken place in various cities in North America. Since the 1980s and 1990s, the governments of the USA and Canada — along with development and aid institutions such as CIDA - have been pushing for
free trade agreements. Canada signed a Free Trade Agreement with Peru on May 29 2008, and on June 3 2009, Bill C-24 was passed in the House of Commons to implement this agreement, which further endangers Indigenous territorial rights and Amazonian biodiversity.
