VANCOUVER - Rising Tide activists targeted Shell Canada in Vancouver this afternoon to protest Shell's expansion plans in the Tar Sands. Protesters blocked three gas stations in East Vancouver in support of the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation.

Shell Canada is proposing two new tar sands mine projects in northern Alberta including a massive expansion of the Jackpine Mine. The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation whose lands will be affected by Shell's plans say federal and provincial governments are not fulfilling the promises of Treaty 8. They are challenging the mines on the basis of:

1. A failure to consult the ACFN properly; and
2. The irreversible impacts on culturally protected lands and on hunting, fishing and trapping.

The hearings on the constitutional challenge began today in Fort McMurray. Rising Tide is calling for support by sending letters backing ACFN's challenge and by joining actions like today's protest.
