VANCOUVER  – Enivonmentalists followed up on a hair hoax today outside the Enbridge offices in downtown Vancouver. The event followed major media picking up on a story that the pipeline company would use human hair to mop up oil spills. The hoax pledged human hair from 1,000 salons to be made into "booms" that would sop up spilled oil.

Enbridge wants to build a pipeline to transport oil from the Alberta tarsands across northern BC to a terminal in Kitimat. The company has been making a big PR effort in light of its dismal environmental recond: See recent release from North/Central BC First Nations  for more background.

The "MyHairCares" event featured haircuts outside Enbridge as business people tried to figure out what was happening.  An Enbridge spokesperson decried the stunt as a "cynical attempt to take advantage of public concern about the environment."

On Tuesday, a press release attributed to Greenpeace was sent to mainstream media across Canada detailing Enbridge hair booms.
