Van.Act - Vancouver Action holds DTES community "town hall" regarding planning a tent village at the troubled Athletes Village site.
Approximately 50 people were in attendance at First United Church. (at Gore & Hastings) Well attended with people from the downtown eastside and as far away as Ladner.
Many people there were enthusiactic, yet unsure of the process.
The statement from Van.Act is:
Ending homelesness.
End gentrificaiton
End the criminalization of poverty.
Tristan Markle - Van. Act member, spoke about the "hopeful organic outcomes of the event itself regarding messaging and focus".
Teresa Diewert: community activist spoke of "the importance of joining the fight for social housing at Athletes Village to the DNC - Downtown Eastside Neighborhood Council's - Fight For 10 Sites Campaign". See: http://dnchome.wordpress.com/
They plan on holding their next "town hall" meeting at the First United Church next Sun at the same time. (Sun, Jan 30, 2011 - 2pm)
