War on Drugs turns 40
DOWNTOWN EASTSIDE - Members of the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU) marked the 40th anniversary of the so-called War on Drugs today with a call for sensible drug policies.
Forty years ago today, then US president Richard (I am Not a Crook) Nixon officially declared the war on drugs. Since then, the US government has wasted more than $1 trillion on failed drug policy and Canada has consistently mimicked US policy.
More than 500,000 people across the US are behind bars for violating a nonviolent drug offense.
VANDU says "We're fed up with these disastrous policies – our governments MUST finally end this shockingly wasteful, counterproductive war."

Ridiculous if you come to think of it. You don’t want drugs on the road, then clean the mess, don’t jail people as though they were murderers.
