UBC students massively recognize education as a right

by UBC Social Justice Centre

Recent developments at the University of British Columbia have demonstrated that the Liberal government is out of touch with the student body of British Columbia. While it has been cutting funding to higher learning institutions, the students at UBC have taken a clear stand on increased government funding in order to decrease the high tuition fees in the province. In the recent AMS (UBC student society) elections, 90.9% of voters voiced their support for a referendum question that urged the UBC student government to recognize education as a right and consequently advocate for the reduction of national and international student tuition. This motion was introduced on the ballot after the Social Justice Centre managed to gain the 1,000 signatures necessary to put a referendum question on an AMS ballot. These results clearly illustrate that the student body feels strongly about reducing tuition.
