If you live in Canada, or have any friends in Canada who are interested in animal issues, please read and share the following links pertaining to the upcoming federal election.

This first link is for a party called the Animal Alliance Animal Voters Party of Canada, they are running a growing number of candidates each election.  They have by far the strongest animal protection record of all the parties, and the members and candidates work hard all year on animal issues.  This party has more pro-active policies similar to the European Greens.  Sadly the Canadian Greens have much more conservative stands on animal issues, although they are better that the current ruling Conservatives who side with hunters and commercial sealers.

The World Society for the Protection of Animals sent round a general survey to the five largest mainstream parties regarding animals (read it and weep):

Regarding the UVic rabbits specifically, federal and provincial Green Party leaders May and Sterk refused to participate in the campaign, although several candidates did so of their own accord.

Laura Leah Shaw, a Vancouver GP candidate was involved with the campaign with the Texas rabbits.  Bernadette Keenan, also a GP candidate in Surrey, wrote some letters to the university, and so did Lisa Barrett, GP former mayor of Bowen Island (not running).

NDP South Saanich MLA Lana Popham tried unsuccessfully to bring a private members bill to the BC legislature to ban the sale of fertile rabbits in pet stores.

That all for now folks!

Don't forget to vote!
