The fight for respect and a fair contract continues to heat up at the Hilton Metrotown. Join UNITE HERE Local 40 members September 22 for a rally at the Hilton and support hotel workers and their families! Rally begins at 5pm in front of the hotel.
In the last year, hotel workers in Vancouver and Richmond achieved good union contracts with workload relief, improved benefits and wages. Burnaby hotel workers deserve a fair contract, too! Yet Hilton Metrotown workers have been working without a union contract since June 2010.
On August 25, 100 Hilton Metrotown workers delivered a petition to hotel management along with this messsage: "We're all working to support our families. We just want to be paid fairly for the work we do and we want to be able to retire with dignity." The petition was signed by 85% of the workers in the hotel. Over a hundred workers have participated in bargaining so far. (Hilton room attendants pictured at left)
Many of the Hilton workers have been with the hotel since day one, when the hotel opened its doors in 1999. They feel a great sense of loyalty to hotel guests, many of whom return year after year. But retirement, housekeeping workload, benefits, and wages all weigh heavily on the minds of Hilton workers thinking about the future. Its time for a fair contract now!
Join Hilton Metrotown workers, friends and allies on September 22 as we Rally for Respect!
