Victoria Anarchist Bookfair dates: September 11th and 12th, 2010

NEW LOCATION!

640 Courtney Street, Songhees Territories

We are happy to announce the fifth year of the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair, located on unceded Songhees Territory in Victoria, British Columbia. The Bookfair is for anarchists and non-anarchists, with participants from all over North America and beyond. We seek to introduce anarchism to the public, to further elaborate upon current and historical anarchist ideals and to foster dialogue between various anarchist tendencies. Participants from different anarchist traditions, visions, and practices are welcome. Events include book and information tables, workshops, readings, films, presentations, and much more. A Festival of Anarchy will take place during the week before the Bookfair, beginning on September 5th, 2010.

We are proud to have received Monday Magazine's 'M Award' for Victoria's best literary event in 2009. It's our 5th Birthday and we're going to have a blast!

This year, we are seeking submissions on the theme of the often forgotten ways in which anarchists have transformed their communities and the importance of memory as we look into the future.

Please be sure to read over the Bookfair Principles before sending your proposal. Contact information is available on the contact section of the website.

Call to Participate

How to Request a Table: for Sept 11 & 12

The heart of the Bookfair is the main room including booksellers, distributors, independent presses and political groups from all over BC, North America, and abroad. Please make sure to read our statements of principles before contacting us to request a table. If you haven't tabled at the Bookfair before, please include a short description of your group and the materials you intend to distribute at the Bookfair.

There is no fee for tabling at the Bookfair, but we will be requesting 10% of sales after expenses in order to help us cover the costs of the venue rental.

The deadline to request a table is July 15, 2010 (we cannot guarantee inclusion on the poster or in our program-zine for late submissions).

Workshops & Presentations Proposals: for Sept 11 & 12

The Bookfair organizing collective is currently seeking workshop and presentation proposals. We are looking for workshops relating to anarchism and anti-authoritarian, indigenous or anarchist-supported struggles, alternative economic strategies and other anarchist related topics including classical anarchism, syndicalism, labour, feminism, anti-racism, anti-colonialism, resistance, solidarity, media, communications, animal rights, gender issues, health, poverty, art, non-violence, ecology, natural and sustainable building, cultural diversity, urban and self-reliant agriculture, co-operatives and the social economy, transportation alternatives, music distribution, bookbinding & self publishing, bookstores, dumpster diving and foraging, post-industrial society, and local exchange trading systems. The workshops and presentations could be aimed at people who are curious about, or new to, anarchist ideas, or address an anarchist-themed topic in some depth intended for people who are already familiar with anarchism, or who might identify as anarchists.

Please provide a title, and short description of the workshop's content in your application.

Standard bookfair workshops last for 50 minutes with a 10 minute break in between. While we are open to a variety of workshop formats, we recommend facilitators leave at least 20 minutes for discussion at the end of their presentations.

NOTE: The deadline for all workshop and presentation proposals is August 1st, 2010 (after that date we cannot guarantee a timeslot at the Bookfair or inclusion in our program-zine for late submissions).

Festival of Anarchy Events: for Sept 5 – 10 (various locations t.b.a.)

In addition to the Bookfair, a "Festival of Anarchy" will take place during the preceding week, with diverse anarchist-themed events occurring at different venues in Victoria. The only limit is your imagination. You can propose any number or types of events, including street art, posters, chalk arts, performance art, film-screenings, pranks, and social/political workshops. Past workshops included self-defense, dumpstering 101, various arts & crafts, stencil graffiti, body modifications, and various bike stuff. Note: We are not holding a D.I.Y. Fair this year.

Festival of Anarchy events are organized autonomously from the Bookfair and, as such, venues are the responsibility of Festival Event Organizers. If you are interested in being part of the Festival, please provide a title and short description of your program.

We strongly recommend Festival Events are NOT scheduled during the Bookfair's operating hours. In general, contacting the Bookfair Collective about scheduling dates before our proposal deadline is a useful way to ensure the least number of event conflicts.

The Bookfair collective is committed to helping promote autonomous festival events to the best of our ability through the program zine and the website. To ensure your Festival of Anarchy event will be included in the Bookfair program-zine, please submit a description of your event by August 1st, 2010.

Festival of Anarchy Announcement: Graphic Radicals Exhibition and Opening Party Bash, Legacy Gallery, 630 Yates St., Victoria, Coast Salish Territories, Saturday, Sept. 11, 8 pm.

This year’s bookfair features a special exhibition, “Graphic Radicals” which charts the history and art work of New York City’s World War Three Illustrated collective. The exhibit covers the art and politics of WW3 since its founding in 1980. On Saturday evening the Legacy Gallery in downtown Victoria will be hosting an opening celebration. Members of World War 3 will also be participating in the bookfair.
