RCMP Attempt to Gather Info from Lil'wat
RCMP Attempt to Gather Info from Lil'wat
In mid-January members of the RCMP 2010 Integrated Security Unit attempted to meet with and gather information from members of the Lil'wat at Mt. Currie. The Lil'wat band council is one of the Four Host First Nations, while those approached by police were long-time grassroots community activists (inc. elder James Louie). One of the RCMP officers identified was Const. Mike Smook of the ISU.
In late January, the Whistler Question ran a story highlighting the grassroots opposition to 2010 among the Lil'wat, including the recent RCMP visits:
"One group that does seem quite interested in talking to them is the RCMP Integrated Security Unit (ISU) for the 2010 Olympics and Paralympics. A representative recently contacted [Carol] Thevarge to establish a contact, though she said no meeting has yet taken place.
"They didn't even mention the Olympics," said Thevarge, whose original name is Yitksa7. "They said, 'We've heard you're a good community contact and we'd like to meet you"...
"Cst. Bert Paquet, a spokesperson for the RCMP's 2010 Integrated Security Unit (ISU), said contacting Thevarge is part of the unit's effort to establish and maintain contact with people in the community.
"We try to involve people that we feel might be affected by the Games or the security planning of the Games," Paquet said on Monday (Jan. 26). "We want to make sure that they're involved in our planning and that there's timely consultations regarding community engagements… and the need to maintain public safety and security levels" (Whistler Question, Jan. 29, 2009).
The RCMP here again use the 'community consultation' rhetoric as a pretext for their blatant attempts to spy, harass, and intimidate anti-Olympic opposition.
