SURREY -   A vigil was held today for 23-year-old Navarone Woods, killed by transit police on Dec. 28 in a Safeway store near the Surrey central Skytrain station.

Friends, family and coworkers gathered at the station to honour the life of the well-loved young Gitxsan man from Hazelton and questioned why transit police chose to shoot him to death. Eyewitness reports said he was distraught and harming himself when armed transit cops arrived and opened fire. They had intercepted a police call of a disturbance in the store next to the Skytrain station.

Those who gathered today also criticized mainstream media its coverage of the tragedy, which focused on untrue claims Navarone Woods suffered from mental illness and on defending his execution. Speakers voiced little faith in the government run police review and continued calls for justice for 'Nav.'
