BC Supreme Court Grants Temporary Injunction for UVic Rabbits Friday July 30 2010
A temporary injunction was granted today in the Supreme Court of British Columbia in Vancouver against the University of Victoria's trapping and killing of any rabbits on the University of Victoria's property.
Tom Smith, head of Facilities Management at the University of Victoria had said the university planned to start trapping on August 1, 2010, this Sunday, and would trap an estimated 400 rabbits in August alone.
UVic has promised to release any trapped rabbits to Ministry of Environment approved sanctuaries, but several sanctuaries are currently awaiting their permits and UVic will not wait till they get them.
$50,000 has been donated by Fur-Bearer Defenders to spay and neuter the rabbits, and over $14,000 to date has been donated to the sanctuaries fund and an emergency vet fund has also been established.
The parties are due back in court by August 27, 2010.
