At Pidgin more cops from the PSU were deployed.
They also had a paramedic from the ambulance service (they had the large backpacks). The ambulance service is part of the PSU.
These are two commanders of the PSU (both Sergeants) and a member of the fire department (with red lettering on the back of his reflective vest). The fire department is also part of the PSU.
More PSU cops were deployed as the protest marched south on Main Street. They were transported by Sprinter vans acquired for the 2010 Olympics.
The VPD transports its PSU members with these Sprinter vans, which usually carry 5-6 PSU members. They can be distinguished from the Sprinter prisoner transport vans by their large side and rear windows.
This second deployment saw PSU members wearing coveralls with body armour, 3 foot long riot batons, and gas masks strapped to their legs.
They also had their own camera crew.
As the black bloc shed their outer layer of black clothing behind a banner, a group of PSU cops moved up to observe.

Over 100 people rallied at Victory Square in downtown Vancouver for a May Day anti-capitalist march. After lighting torches the protesters marched through the Downtown Eastside, briefly stopping at the Pidgin restaurant which has been the target of ongoing anti-gentrification pickets. Vancouver police had a large number of cops, primarily from the Public Safety Unit (PSU) deployed. By the end of the march near the Main Street Skytrain station there were as many as 50 cops.
